The two articles explore the cultures, rape attitude and beliefs that promote the occurrence of sexual violence. The first article, ‘A cultural perspective for understanding how campus environment perpetuate rape supportive culture’ By Sarah J. Argiero et al, was retrieved from Journal of the Indiana University Student Personnel Association. The second article, ‘Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture: Why Are Some Fraternities More Dangerous Placesfor Women?’ by A. Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Spade was retrieved from the journal of Gender and Society.
In the first article on A cultural perspective for understanding how campus environment perpetuate rape supportive culture’, the authors have clearly identified the problem as the high prevalence of sexual violence with the university and college campuses. They vividly highlight the factors and key features which promote the high prevalence of sexual violence within college and university campus as acceptance of rape myths, peer support and promotion of hegemonic masculinity. According to the article, it is reported that close to 20% of female college student experience sexual assault in their time in college and university campus. A number of male students were found to have committed rape according to the legal definition but most of the students did not consider their action to be illegal or rape. This clearly shows the rape culture embraced by the students given that they do not consider their sexual assault on their female counterparts as an illegal let alone an immoral deed (Argiero et al 26).
