The experiment comprised of three essential stakeholders; the experimenter, teacher and learner. The experimenter retained his position; however, the subject of the experiment participated in the capacity of the teacher whereas an actor or confederate participated in the capacity of the learner. Each had specific roles. The experimenter assumed the authoritative role, which cantered on issuing orders to the subject whose role was to follow the directives or orders issued by the experimenter. Conversely, the confederates role was to pretend to be a volunteer willing to learn from the teacher. Before the commencement of the study, both the subjects and confederates drew slips to determine whether they participated in the study as teachers or learners. Both the experimenters and the confederates were aware that the process was previously rigged in such a way that the subjects would always draw the slip labelled "teacher". In addition, they would have no reason to doubt the fairness of the process, as the confederates always confirmed that they drew the slip labelled "learner". After the completion of this process, the experimenter would separate the teacher and the learner. Despite being placed in different rooms, the two could communicate but not see each other. The experimenter would proceed to expose the "teacher" to the electric shock the "learner" would be subjected to each time they gave an incorrect response. The electric shock generator produced the electric shocks "learners" were supposedly exposed to after giving incorrect responses. The experiment officially began when the subject began teaching the confederates the word pairs. They would do so by reading the first word of the pair, which they followed with four possible responses. The "learner" would respond by pressing the buzzer then await the teachers
