The very fact that I affiliate to an upper middle class background and thereby have access to a comfortable life style and quality education owes largely to my racial identity. I firmly believe that varied social and economic advantages in the American society have to some extent been historically determined on the bases of race (Knight, 2002, p. 41). Hence, in that sense I am privileged in the sense that I affiliated to an Anglo-American descent. Again, primarily owing to my family background and the commensurate social, economic and academic advantages it facilitated, I enjoy a high status with regards to the social stratification imminent on my social ambiance.
The other important thing that I inherited from my family is my religion. Going by the fact that my family’s views regarding religion remained constant and stable over time and my folks always remained strong supporters of religious freedom, commitment to freedom and equality have always been the salient aspects of my personal life and social persona. For instance, my father is an outspoken person who does not shy away or dither from expressing his views. He actively participated in the 60s antiwar demonstrations and has always fought for the rights of the minorities and the underprivileged. His influence has indeed made me ascribe to the role of a political activist, and I actively remained associated with groups and organizations that fight for human rights.
It would not be wrong to say that my social circle and the people I socialize with indeed had a big influence on my personality. For instance, George is a good friend of mine and he happens to be an outstanding public speaker.
