The patient wants to take responsibility for his own actions, but the doctor does not want to give him the opportunity to do it. The doctor is in the control. He is responsible for the patient and for his treatment. The doctor represents the social class of people who have a certain power. They have the opportunity and the right to decide for others. The patient in this case is a passive recipient. So he wants to change the situation and brings a gun.
Patients with mental disorders present a separate group in the society. The attitude of the society toward these people has always been controversial. They were often considered as a threat for other people and in some way isolated from the society. However, the isolation does not seem very helpful in terms of treatment of the disease. In the same time, some people with mental disorders who were not isolated from the society become a reason of serious problems.
In the Positive school Plotts is affected by the society. He committed this crime because the society made him. The responsibility for the crime lies on the society. The society let him have a gun and walk freely without supervision, even though he was a person with mental disorders. Maybe, his mental illness was also caused by the society in which he lived.
As a patient of the psychiatric crisis center Plotts cannot be the only one responsible for the crime. The responsibility for the crime lies also on the doctor, who was supposed to provide an adequate evaluation of the mental state of the patient and anticipate his inclination to aggression. As a doctor who works in psychiatric crisis center, Mr Silverman was supposed to have better ways of interaction with his patients than the gun in his drawer.
