Download file to see previous pages... The stepfamily being examined involves a woman between the ages of 30 and 35 and a man between the ages of 36 and 40. In this case, the husband is actually on his third marriage, a father of five from his first two marriages. The wife has never been married, but is the mother of one son. Just a few months into their marriage, they found that they were expecting a baby from their union. Other factors that contribute to the dynamics of this family have to do with the relationships between all of the adults affected by this union and the geographical distances between them.
The first stage of this blended family involves unrealistic ideas that describe the the Fantasy stage. The way this family implemented the Fantasy stage is the idea from the husband has finally found a wife that would take care of him and his children in the traditional sense. He imagined that she would be the wife he never had---someone more like his mother. The wife fantasized about finally having a large family to love and a husband that would always make her feel safe and be a good provider. While to most, these may seem like reasonable expectations. But, they both soon realized that their expectations were starkly different.
In the meantime, the children are having their own ideas about the union. It is usually how they can undo the relationship. In this case, the oldest child of the husband feels like his disrespectful behavior towards his stepmother would cause contention between the adults and things can go back to the way they were. Maybe his parents can even get back together. Of course, his disposition affects that of his younger siblings.
