However, to some extent the societal view towards childlessness has some stigmatization. This essay will put into perspective some of the reasons why some couples in the United States have opted to remain childfree.
The social acceptability of childlessness is becoming a norm among many individuals. All racial and ethnic groups in the US are embracing childlessness hence the way it has been viewed in the past especially through cultural eyes has really changed. According to a report by Pew Research, there has been a decline in fertility by 9% between 2007 and 2011 (Sandler, 2013). This indicates that the acceptability of having no children is becoming part of the American reproductive culture.
Another reason why some American couples have opted to be childless is because they feel that they have the freedom to choose. 31-year old Knoxville says that she felt that since she had a passion for children and had an opportunity to deal with them as a school administrator, she feels her passion is satisfied and hence no need to have her own (Hill 2013).
There is also change in responsibilities in the society hence some couples do not treasure having children. As opposed to the traditional perception that many children means help in duties, today couples view children as impediments to their leisure and work. This has made many couples to make a deliberate decision to remain childless despite their ability to have children.
The development of various birth control methods has made it possible for people to control having children while having the pleasure of sex. Couples who endeavor to avoid unwanted pregnancies prefer permanent birth control methods. There is a shift towards making money and having pleasures hence making it possible to avoid children from interfering with their activities.
