hese discoveries are often unexpected and may come as a surprise for both of them, and the counselor should be in a position to offer any support required to accept, assimilate with or adapt to these new discoveries. Finally, the counselor learnt that the longer path, as chosen by Steve is not always the easier path, and that it presents its own huge share of difficulties. In addition, tests may come that could overwhelm the person and the journey they are taking. These tests however, could be used as stepping stones for reaching new possibilities that were not considered there before; they could also assist the individual to come up with an entirely different understanding of themselves, other people as well as the world (Halstead, 2000).
The counselor may change the way he handles the situations presented by clients by ceasing to try and offer solutions for all situations. This is due to the fact that he was able to discover that sometimes, the clients have got their solutions, but all they seek is some support, companionship and empowerment in realizing the solutions to their issues. For instance in Steve’s case, every person he spoke to had the idea that he should accept his condition so that he would move on with life. However, Steve had the drive to overcome the limitations and all he needed was support to meet his goals and objectives. The counselor was able to provide him with that support, and this is a path that the counselor could make use of in future practice (Halstead, 2000).
I think that most people I come into contact with change me in some way and this is due to the fact that they are all different and do their things in a rather different manner from which I do mine. If I come across a polite and courteous individual, I shall feel compelled to change and apply the virtues in my life.
