Download file to see previous pages... ttending an elegant dinner that involves several guests from all over the world including China and France, I need to understand the cultural differences in my surrounding so as not to be involved in an awkward situation. When greeting an individual from China, I will expect them to fold their hands in a bow and not speak. When dining with them, I expect them to abstain from speaking or use few words because to them, silence is golden. When greeting a person from France, I will expect lots of pleasantries, gestures, complimentary and welcoming words. When dining with a person from France, I expect several courses to be taken in one dinner party and some sort of conversation while the meal is going on.
When involved in a conversation with a Chinese person, topics such as religion, environmental conversation with a stand on fish and issues to do with harmony of the community as well as business ethics and culture should be avoided. This is because, they value harmony in their communities which is important for avoiding conflict and thus one may be castigating the action which may cause hard feelings (Hall & Hall, 1990). The Chinese do not believe in one God but in sages, which contrasts with the US and may also not content with conversation of fish which forms a big percentage of their meals. The business culture in China promotes illegal practices such as bribery which may not stand well with one and thus cannot be conversed on. A conversation with a person from France would involve the origins and the much acclaimed language but several other factors need not be included. This relate to religion topics, war, sexuality and dominance.
In China a behavior such as shaking hands cannot be used by people whose social status is not the same. This is not the case in the US. The okay sign formed by curling the index finger over the thumb and extending the remaining fingers above them is used to mean that everything is good in the US (Hall & Hall, 1990).
