Also, substance abuse contributes to criminal activity. In this paper, I will be studying the relationship between drug use and criminal activity.
Drug use is often associated with crime in a society. Drugs such as opioid and marijuana can cause the users to adopt violent behaviors that can lead to violent criminality such as rape, robbery with violence and even to some extents murder. There are various reasons that make the users become aggravated and have the urge to commit crime as a result of drugs and the society has to be on the watch to eliminate the sources of this vice (MacCoun, Kilmer, & Reuter, 2003).
Psychoactive drugs cause two categories of problems. The first type of problem is associated with the direct taking of these drugs (MacCoun, Kilmer, & Reuter, 2003). Such problems include drug overdose. The second type of problem is associated with the type of the drugs that are being used and whether they are illegal or no various charges and costs are put into consideration such as the incarceration of drug offenders and the treatment of drug dependence. The American society has undergone a serious transformation from drug tolerance to drug restriction. Social areas that arose this response are; Drug toxicity, drug-related violence and crime and the potential of drug dependence. Drug toxicity is a disruption of the normal behavior as a result of the influence of drugs (MacCoun, Kilmer, & Reuter, 2003). It can cause someone to go insane or assume a character that is unnatural such as talking to oneself. The other social factor is dependence where an individual cannot carry out the daily tasks without the usage of such drugs.
