In media circles, there is little discussion of this group. This is even worse in history paperwork or classroom discussions where they are largely overlooked. Through historical accounts, it is evident that the Native Americans were suppressed. This is evidenced by actions such as slavery, which led to their classification under one ethnic identity. Racial discrimination against minorities always persist, in spite of the stringent measures to curb the vice. For instance, Native American women still earn less as compared to their White counterparts. This means that there exists a possibility of them being subordinate to the other racial inclinations in terms of economic empowerment. In the 19th century, there was considerable speculation that Native Americans would become non-existent both as a race and as a nation (Sellers, 2008). This did not happen as they revived themselves effectively and asserted their independence.
Native Americans may be categorized as multiracial. This means that their ancestry is attributable to a mixture of races. In the normal American societal setting, people live along these social and cultural identities. In 2000, after much protest from the populace, citizens were allowed recognition as multiracial. They were permitted to choose more than a singular ethnicity. Several Americans identified themselves as members of more than one race. The racially and ethnically varied American humanity recognizes Native American as an ethnic and racial grouping. Native American women dominate diverse positions in the society. Apart from the political front of being activists, lawyers and leaders, they also serve as artist and entertaining storytellers. Even so, demographers and the American authorities at times find it difficult to delineate who exactly is a Native American. In research studies, the results categorize them under minorities, or just as Native Americans.
