Some experts argue in favor of marijuana because of the strong economic case for it (Moffatt, 1). They argue that marijuana will be used even if it is illegal so the government will be better off legalizing. Also, it is not cost effective to tackle the problem of drug use through policing (Chomsky, 1).The legalizing of the drug will allow the government to regulate the trade of marijuana and in turn earn tax revenue. This money can then be spent on educating people about the dangers of drugs.
People who oppose legalization of marijuana argue that it is a dangerous drug and legalizing it will increase its consumption which will not be good for the society (Martinez, 1). Marijuana is still a drug and has harmful side effects. This is why legalizing the drug will allow people to view the use of the drug in good light and such an action might also promote the use of other kinds of drug. This is why legalizing marijuana is considered an ethical issue because of the harmful side effects it has on the society.
Utilitarianism calls for evaluating an action based on its consequences on the larger portion of the society. The maximum benefit of the maximum number of people in the society should be preserved at all times, according to utilitarianism. This particular ethical theory solves the problem of legalizing marijuana because studies have proven that prevention and education is the most cost-effective way of dealing with marijuana. A simple cost and benefit analysis would tell that legalizing marijuana will increase the overall benefit of everyone and therefore marijuana should be legalized (Johnson, 1). ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
