According to Barndt (2), most consumers of tomatoes and tomato products knows neither the process involved in the production of those tomatoes nor the people involved in that process. This is because a chain of distributors links producers and consumers. These distributers are the corporations of fast food chains of Which McDonalds is one of them. This corporations buy the product from the producers and then avail it to the consumers.
This link between the producers and consumers of the tomatoes involves several processes that require large investments. Some of these processes are transportation of the produce, trading, processing and commercialization. Small group of capitalist mainly dominates this link. According to Shiva (1997), this capitalist can use their power to control how things happen and exploit others while destroying the environment for their own gain. Therefore, this link has had several social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental consequences.
The link between the producers of tomatoes and the consumers has lead to many social consequences. One of the social consequences is the exploitation of the women worker in Mexico where production mostly takes place. These workers are forced to work more than eight hours a day, six and a half days a week (Barndt 9). This is exploitation since the pay they get is not equivalent to the amount of work they do. Another social consequence is that it has resulted to the people in the global north to feel superior to those in the global south. According to Barndt (10), the link between the produces and the consumers has resulted to dominance of the so called knowledge economy of the north which makes northerners to feel superior.
