In these games, a player usually takes in a quest or a mission that needs to be undertaken in order for one to win. Like tabletop RPGs, they put value towards the narrative of the story but these electronic RPGs are more focused on character development. These electronic media games are often focusing on the decision making skills of the player and the story of the game takes form because of that. The illusion that the player is in control of the game is part of the charm, part of the mystique that makes the game click with the audience.
Video games. True, role playing can be done offline, “un-electronically”, or even only using cards. But the thing is, video game RPG is one of the most entertaining, if not the most popular platform of RPG. Perhaps this is because of the fact that video games are visual in nature. Humans are visual creatures, especially men. Video games also have audio, so it’s not just visual, and the fact that you have to be coordinated (hand-eye coordination is a must) in order for you to win is practically a winning formula. All senses are engaged when you play a video game. And playing that it is very entertaining!
Videogames have been around for more than fifty years. In fact, it all started in 1947 when two men named Thomas Goldsmith and Estle Ray Mann invented and patented something called “cathode ray tube amusement device”. The concept of video gaming spread when MIT developed more games in order to explore the computer’s use for educational purposes. There were lots of games developed then. However, video games would not become popular, or even a household name, until the late 70s and the 80s. Those were the years that video games were very popular.
