The message could be interpreted as being relayed to a person, or to a spiritual being (a divine power) who was instrumental in providing guidance, inspiration and direction to rise above life’s difficulties, challenges, and trials
When I analyzed the message of the song in terms of sociological concepts discussed by Charon and Vigilant’s (2009), I am reminded of the concepts on human beings as symbol users (247). From the song, the message was simple, the singer narrating that the arrival of someone, who could be a loved one, enabled him to change his lonely and troubled status to being raised above past achievements. In addition, the song could also be interpreted in spiritual terms; where the arrival of someone could be explained as the coming of God or Jesus to one’s life that helped uplift whatever challenges and difficulties that were putting him down.
In both situations, human beings were indicated as symbol users by using the terms such as “I can stand on mountains” and “walk on stormy seas” to symbolize achievements that were not normally done before by majority of individuals. Actually, the second phrase, “walk on stormy seas” is seen as an impossible task – but then again, it is just used to symbolize achieving something great.
Also, the other symbols used in the song are “But when you come and I am filled with wonder, Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity” which could be interpreted as due to the other person’s coming, assistance and inspiration, the singer (or sender of the message) has been filled with optimistic feelings and happiness (wonder) that there seems to be a perceived brief look at eternity. This is again a proof of symbolism because no one could even glimpse at eternity ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
