Culture in society basically affects peoples beliefs and attitudes. It refers to the symbolic activities and patterns that are within structures and impact human activity. It is a belief of that defines a groups way of life. From these definitions, culture is “a way of life; determines the criterion; and is inherit to the juvenile,” (Wongsahai, 2012).
“Defining our own culture is difficult,” (West, 2007). This is because for anyone person, it is just as simple as the water they breathe. It is not until they remove themselves from their own culture that they are more able to define how their own culture differs from the new environment that they are in. For example, some of the customs I was used to or even the foods that I normally ate were just an everyday thing to me. However, when taken out of the culture I had always known, it was then that I realize that from the outside looking in, my Saudi culture is much different than some other group in comparison. Eastern and western cultures have been compared in research for years by psychologists and sociologists and several other experts only to find that the framework is significantly different. Cultures will never meet in the middle nor will one ever redefine another (West, 2007). All anyone can ever do is to try to respect a new culture.
When looking at two different cultural elements and characteristics, I can apply these to my own life. When looking at the element that culture is learned, I realize that growing up in a Saudi culture and then finding myself in the midst of a different area learning about other cultures, I know that the things I knew in my own home are much different when stepping outside of it.
