Ever growing rate of joblessness and poverty and resultant hopelessness and despair is pushing the Pakistani youth towards addiction of drug. According to a recent survey, every year around 6 lac addicts join the army of drug addiction.
According to Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), the number of drug addicts is growing each year and currently there are approximately 10 million drug addicts in Pakistan. Around 30 million people are addicted to smoking and each year as many as 100,000 people die due to this life threatening habit. Apart from these, numbers of shisha smokers are also growing by each passing day.
Number of people who are addicted to opium (heroine) is approximated as 1.5 million. Moreover, around 25 to 30 million people are getting adversely affected by the addiction habits of their relative, family members or friends. Societal taboos, peer pressure and economic frustration are the major drivers behind the growing number of drug addicts.
There are many drug dens places where people smoke heroin, hashish and other drugs. In Pakistan, hashish and heroine are considered as widely sold and desirable drugs followed by bhang, alcohol, solvent sniffs, tranquillizers, anti-depressants and cocaine. These drugs are sold and bought in undisclosed places.
These statistics revealed that a large number of people in Pakistan are addicted to some kind of drugs which is an alarming sign for this nation. This phenomenon is hardly seen in any developing or developed country because of the strict rules and regulations. In almost every developed country, there is strict ban on these items which are easily available in under developed country like Pakistan.
