Download file to see previous pages... f approximately 50 media companies in the early 1980s, Kaufman revealed that statistics have clearly traced that “today, there are just six corporations: Time Warner, Disney, Murdochs News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, Viacom (formerly CBS), and General Electric” (Kaufman par. 5). Understandably, as indicated, the type and kind of articles to be published for mainstream media are controlled by these six corporations. This fact was further corroborated by citing the words of Karl Marx which Kaufman summed as “the ideas of the ruling class are the ruling ideas” (Kaufman par. 7).
As disclosed, the author learned of this type of censored articles from Project Censored, group administered by the sociology department at Sonoma State University in California that gets to publish top news articles which were apparently censored by the top six corporations but were deemed crucial to be released. Accordingly, top 25 news articles, from more than 1000 nominated to be included among the intentionally underreported articles but were worthy to be released for the public’s awareness and knowledge.
As sociologists, the Project Censored endeavor epitomizes the need to use skills that are supposed to be utilized for the benefit of mankind: “ epistemological curiosity so that we question where our knowledge comes from and wonder why it is we know the things we do; …methodological literacy to figure out the best way to gather research on particular issues; active engagement with the world such that we use our sociological knowledge for the betterment of life on earth” (Kaufman par. 8).
The fact that media has been controlled by a handful of large corporations attest to the rampant censorship that inhibits transparency and public accountability.
