Main objective of the system is to reduce and prevent criminal incidences, arrest and prosecute suspects, hearing of criminal cases in courts, administration and enforcement of court orders, parole and working with offenders and ex-offenders in jails or in a community.
Law enforcement i.e., front line of criminal justice system is police officers, police community support officers, and prison officers. Law enforcement component has the responsibility to take reports of the crime. Investigation, gathering and protection of the evidence, arresting the offenders’ and provision of testimony during court procedures also follows. Hence, police officers are the main preventers, detectors and investigators of crime. After this prosecution occurs that is handled by prosecutors. Prosecutors are lawyers who represent Government and not the victim, throughout the court procedures until the suspect or offender is sentenced by the court. The crown prosecution services or CPS, which is now responsible for all prosecution decisions, employs solicitors, barristers and designated caseworkers. The prosecutor considers the evidence gathered by the police whether to file written charges or release the suspect without prosecution (p:16, Gibson, Bryan, Cavadino, &Faulkner, 2008). After this, the case goes into court trials, where an attorney is assigned to the offender either by the court or by himself.
Defense attorney represents the defendant against Government’s case. Judges in the courts decide whether to release the offender before the trial or to sentence the convicted offenders. Correction officers supervise the convicts when they are in jail, in prison or on parole. They make sure that the facilities in which prisoners are kept are safe and secure.
