This may as well give reference to cases of intellectual culture particularly in the secularization and post-industrialization. This paper examines the dark side of modernity as perceived by Marx Weber and his theories of modernity.
Based on Marx Weber, he introduced the principle of Iron cage which refers to the rise of rationalization associated with social life. The principle divides individuals based on teleological efficiency, rational computation and power. Weber goes a step further to discuss the issue of bureaucratization of the social order referred to as “the polar of icy darkness”. His main concern at this level is the social acts and personalized implications that people attach to their actions as they correlate within particular social situations. He gained the power in bureaucracy and rationalization though the belief that human beings only understand issues based on the attached meanings.
According to Weber, the dark side of modernity is seen through rationalization and bureaucracy that human beings have developed. For the two terms, the direction of change involves bringing together conventional brotherhood, displacing the ancient religious relationships. However, the modern society is now characterized by its change in the incentives of personal characteristics. The setting in of these states of human beings caused social actions to be based on efficiency rather than the old types that were associated with kinship. In addition, rationalization and bureaucracy altered human behavior so that it became dominated bi goal-oriented reasoning and less by conventions and values. This kind of transformation according to Weber has a direct link to the novel forms in terms of a strict set of principles based on development in bureaucracy and capitalism (Goldthorpe, 91).
