Nowadays, people are informed of global, national, and local affairs via their mainstream media. While analyzing the global media culture, it is clear that there is no common code of conduct for global media operations. The high intensity of competition forces media to operate in a way that would increase their volume of audiences and commercial gains. Hence, it seems that global media focuses more on sensationalism rather than reliable reporting. There have been countless mergers and buyouts in the field of global media since 1980s. Researches indicate that ‘individual-ownerships’ and the influence of advertisers have greatly impacted the way media report news. Like any other field, American dominance is visible in the area of global media too. However, global media have some demerits too. The monopolistic nature of some global media often questions the reliability of news reported. Such media just try to impose their views and beliefs on their audience. This situation may cause people to misinterpret facts. Finally, some recent reports indicate that social media websites sometimes become a platform for ‘culture wars’ although such sites intend to promote cultural harmony. social media constitute a central part of global media. In the view of Ahlqvist et al, social media can be simply referred to virtual communities and networks that assist people to create and share information and ideas. The widespread popularity of social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and YouTube has strengthened the influence of global media. Since the internet is a network that connects the globe, social media can operate in a global context and contribute to cultural integration.
This report makes a conclusion that from the above discussion, it is clear that globalization and global media are closely interrelated and they support and promote each other. Global media play a notable role in shaping global societies and making people informed about global affairs. Global media are dominated by some US based transnational media. The major limitation of this paper is that it does not address some aspects including impacts of global media on international relations and human welfare. Despite the growing concerns over the dominance of Western media, global media is likely to grow more in the future. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
