Download file to see previous pages... There are certain important goals of Foreign Service relating to international relations. Some of the areas that the United States Foreign Service concentrates on the economy, state of international peace, humanitarian issues, grants and aids. The United States remains greatly concerned with economic partnership with other nations of the world (Lepgold 47). The economy remains an area of mutual interest in international relations. Cooperation on economic issues brings countries closer more than anything else there may be. It is done through trade ties and bilateral economic pacts. Also paid close attention to is international peace. The United States cooperates with other countries in combating international terror. Currently, the US is leading air strikes in Syria to destroy ‘Islamic States tanks’ that have been used to perpetuate the Syrian war that has lasted over two years and caused a serious humanitarian crisis.
The Foreign Service is hierarchical in nature and has a defined command chain that the US president heads. The congress closely monitors the performances of the many high commissioners and pushes for recall of those deemed not to adequately represent the US interest in the countries having diplomatic ties with the United States (Lepgold 60). The roles of individuals serving in the Foreign Service are definite and are updated from time to time as deemed necessary by the White House and the Congress. Any usurpation of duties or inaction on the part of the high commissioners may attract recall. The existing protocol in the Foreign Service, to an extent, limits the intellectual freedom of the high commissioners (Lepgold 57). They have not given the free hand to do anything that is not an official government position. Foreign Service is a bloated and highly bureaucratic government unit. The only common thing is the command center and the fact that it defends the US foreign interest.
