Download file to see previous pages... People’s obsession with the glamorous world of television, film, sport and pop stars has been there for decades. A celebrity could be anyone. He could be a film star, a television star, a sports personality or a pop star. To qualify to be a celebrity, the figure has to be in the public eye. As long as he satiates this condition, he can be called a celebrity. Some other authors argue that the term Celebrity Worship Syndrome is a misnomer. The term “celebrity worship syndrome” was first brought to light by James Chapman in the Daily Mail in 2003 in his article “Do you worship the celebs”. He sought to clarify the term as it was depicted in the academic papers. Matly (2003) called the syndrome “Celebrity Worship Scale” in his paper. However, Chapman stood corrected on his definition. A syndrome is an undesirable condition or quality characterized by a set of abnormal or unusual set of symptoms. Obsession with Celebrities is considered to be a syndrome because research has proven that people who possess such obsession show abnormal and unusual set of symptoms. A research was conducted in UK by Houran’s team to figure out the characteristics that define such a syndrome. (News)More than 600 people were surveyed and it was found that around a third of the rich and elite, in UK is a victim of this syndrome. There are three levels on which the syndrome was characterized on the celebrity worship scale. These include:
1. Entertainment Social: If a person indulges in star gazing casually, he will fall on this end of the celebrity worship scale. However, the level of involvement and celebrity worship is relatively mild at this stage.
