Likewise, a body which receives appropriate nutrients, nourishes on a balanced diet, and takes care of itself through exercise and good physical routine, is more likely to keep the brain healthy as well. A strong mind and a fit body both work together to influence many imperative functions of our lives, of which learning is the most important.
Nordstrom and Merz (2006, p.39) mention, in their book, how mind and body work together to enhance learning. Neuro-pathways from the brain communicate constantly with the cells and muscles present in the body. They transmit and receive millions of messages in fractions of seconds. This lucid association between the mind and body create such a “holistic connection” that is crucial for the overall wellness of a person (Nordstrom & Merz, 2006, p.39). The biggest culprit that disturbs this holistic connection is stress. As mentioned earlier, stress releases a number of grief hormones in our bodies, which disturb the balance of both the mind and body. Stress disturbs not only the neurological system, but also takes its toll on endocrine, hormonal, digestive, reproductive, and circulatory systems. A stressed-out brain is not efficient in obtaining, storing and retrieving the messages. Thus, memory gets affected. Affected memory leads to ineffective learning capability. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
