The nation is facing a stress epidemic. Though the awareness regarding the impact of stress on the physical and emotional health is on the rise, still a large number of Americans are reporting symptoms of stress. 42 percent of the Americans complain of irritability and anger (American Psychological Association 1). More than 35 percent of the Americans report that they feel fatigue, lack of motivation and interest owing to heightened stress (American Psychological Association 1). Besides, a significant number of Americans did report stress associated symptoms like headaches, change in appetite, and change in sex drive, upset stomachs, and insomnia. Many Americans have also reported eating disorders related to stress like lack of appetite, overeating and eating unhealthy foods. There seems to be a positive correlation between stress and unhealthy lifestyle that is not only deteriorating the quality of life of the people, but is also pushing them towards stress and lifestyle associated diseases and early death.
The term “stress eating” has almost become a common norm related to the contemporary life patterns. It has been reported that not only overeating causes stress, but stress also leads to overeating (Harvard Medical School 1). The hormones released by stress and the overall impact of high fat, sugary foods available in the market do push people towards eating more and becoming vulnerable to an array of diseases. According to the American Psychological Association, one in four Americans does rate one’s stress as being 8 or more on a scale of 1 to 10 (American Psychological Association 1).
