Download file to see previous pages The statistics for South Korea are even more worrying, considering the fact that 7.9% of all elementary school children aged between the age of 5 and 9 years in South Korea are considered internet addicts (Alexander, 2012). This rate increases to almost double when the kids reach the high school level, where 12.4% of the high school students in South Korea are considered internet addicts. This behavior is indeed worrying, since it indicates a trend where the young generation can no longer perform without access to the internet.
However, the major question that has remained to be asked is whether internet addiction is good or bad. This is most especially because, when talking about internet addiction, there are a lot of grey areas, which are not definitive regarding whether they amount to bad habits or they are just activities necessary to help people become successful and accomplish their tasks (Dreier, 2014). A survey published in AddictionFacts.com indicated that withdrawing internet access for university students for a period of 24 hours increased anxiety, anger and desperation, since internet use for such students was the ultimate source of euphoria (addictionfacts.com, 2012). When the internet becomes a necessity for individuals to become happy, it is no doubt that it has started affecting such individuals negatively and thus they can be considered internet addicts.
The fact that internet usage by the modern society has become a norm cannot be disputed. Some statistics published by Stanford report have indicated that 12.5% of the Americans are experiences some signs of internet addiction, characterized by excessive and nonessential time spend on the internet (Brandt, 2006). Whether for the young or the adults, internet usage for the modern society has become increasingly adapted and it is turning to some form of habitual tendencies that the society is increasingly finding difficult to stop.
