Download file to see previous pages Despite individual differences in this middle school age the rate of increase in stature is generally similar till the onset of puberty (National Research Council, 1984). Physical development varies in growth patterns due to ethnicities, genetics, hormonal changes, environment, gender or nutrition. Children of these age group have the same fundamental development patterns, but maturity does not come at the same rate. For instance, most girls experience a preadolescent growth phase at around age 9 or 10 whereas most boys undergo the same growth period around the age of 11 to 12. Generally speaking in the middle childhood children tend to appear leaner and athletic.
The middle childhood children learn to dress themselves, play out in the field and their hand-eye coordination shows in small things such as tying their shoes, feeding themselves, catching the ball. They are continually refining their social skills during this stage of development (Ripke at al., 2007). These skills give them a broader perspective of experiences. They start to exhibit independence from the family. When they start going to school, they interact with children of their ages and with teachers. A whole new social change impacts their development. They develop social skills very quickly. An important social change in them would be the social reasoning where they learn to reflect on themselves an accurate perception of others’ intentions, thoughts and feelings, and the ability to generate alternative ways of dealing with social situations (Ripke at al., 2007). They would question their existence and their surroundings in more details. A group of friends and teamwork takes a significant role in their lives. A visible social change would be to the desire to become more socially acceptable or popular.
