The fundamental significance of utilizing developmental theory to explain the foundation of children’s development is the ability of developmental theory to create insights and deeper understanding of the child development process, while also helping in modifying the expectations and strategies of the children caretakers (Beatty, 2006). Through the application of developmental theory, it becomes possible to develop a framework for understanding the child growth and development process, most especially as regarding the understanding of the child conflict arising from the interplay of biological drives and social expectations (Peterson & Tremblay, 1999). Thus, through the developmental theories, it becomes possible to understand this conflict process at each stage of the child development, and thus help the child to cope with the associated anxiety and learn to get along with the expectations of others.
For example, the Psychoanalytic theory has been instrumental in creating a wealth of knowledge in both social and emotional development process of children (Mossler, 2014). The attachment theory is yet another developmental theory that is very helpful in enabling children and their caretakers form positively bonded relationships, through helping in demystifying the children’s past and the future needs, and thus manage to create new relationships.
