When searching for the effectiveness of insulin therapy in the treatment of diabetes, for example. the following search strategy was used to retrieve the information on the Medline database. The first step involved identifying the keywords in the search question: insulin therapy, treatment and diabetes. This is flowed by adoption of a mixture of the keywords and the subject line strategy to search the topic on the Medline database. The first search involving insulin therapy [indexed term]; treatment [indexed term] and diabetes [indexed term] retrieved more than 15 articles some of which were irrelevant to the topic. Therefore, to be able to retrieve only the relevant articles for the search topic, the keyword, effectiveness was added to the subject line in which five articles relevant to the search topic were retrieved.
The entire five articles identified using this search strategy identified mainly with the citations of original studies. Therefore, in order to synthesize and come up with an overall answer to the search question, a systematic review of the articles was done. A systematic review of the search question retrieved only a single article, which is relevant to the search question.
The search strategy that an individual uses normally depends on the database from which the person intends to retrieve clinical information. Therefore, in this case, a combination of keyword and subject line search strategy was used because Medline usually assigns index terms commonly or MeSH for clinical trials and placebos (Fawcett, 2010). Therefore, using a mixture of both keyword and subject line search strategy was the most appropriate in retrieving the clinical inform from the Medline database.
