Download file to see previous pages... One’s meta-paradigm is also based on the environment in which they practice their profession as well as their personal beliefs. This essay will be based on my own experience, practice, environment, beliefs and nursing knowledge extracted from one of the most renowned nursing theory.
Throughout my practice of nursing, I have been guided by deep beliefs of respect for human life. My nursing philosophy is therefore that of promoting, saving and protecting human life from diseases at all costs. Based on this philosophy, I have endeavored to study and carry out research to find out better ways of treating patients in order to improve and preserve their lives. Having worked in an environment where most patients are treated in uncomfortable circumstances characterized by limited resources, inadequate technology and human resource, I realized that it is necessary to make the patients comfortable during their treatment in order to quicken the healing process. My personal meta-paradigm is therefore based on the desire to save human lives through constant research, technology, and creating a comfortable environment for their treatment (Alligood, and Tomey, 2006).
One middle range theory that has influence my meta-paradigm and my entire nursing practice is Katherine Kolcaba’s theory of comfort. I have chosen this theory because if the similarities it has with my personal beliefs which have a basis from the beginning of the nursing profession with the ideas of Florence Nightingale. As a nurse this theory acts as a great tool for guiding me in how I treat patients and their families.
Katherine Kolcaba is a new middle range theorist who began her nursing career on a dementia unit where she first came up with the ideas of comfort in nursing (Sandra, and Timothy, 2012).
