Alfred Hitchcock is renowned for employing various musical styles and practices as compared to other directors. Music was of the most imperative aspects in Hitchcock’s conception of pure cinema. The partnership between Hitchcock and Hermann is deemed one of the most remarkable director-composer collaboration in Hollywood cinema. Overture in North by Northwest is one of the most eminent scores by Hermann. Overture is basically a toccata for symphony orchestra that gives a propulsive preface to North by Northwest. The complete track has been in scored in 6/8, however, the rhythm continually varies. This rhythmic variation throughout the piece creates a thrilling sense apt to the consistently shifting wrong man plot (Kamien).
Hitchcock uses music as an alternate language to depict the unconscious thoughts of his characters. A variety of musical instruments have been used to create this masterpiece such as piano, flute, violins, xylophones, trumpets, clarinets, harps etc. Overture that is a galvanic fandango emphasizes the mystery element in film. The orchestral sounds have been extended beyond the restricted palette used by many composers by employing several contemporary and certain performance practices. The tone quality of Overture appears softer and darker, perhaps due to the fact that strings are muted. The glissando has been employed in this piece when the violins produce a harsh sound in response to the trumpet/xylophone melody. Instruments used in the film demonstrate non-standard instrumentation. Attention has been focused on the darker, orchestral colors by placing special emphasis on clarinets , especially bass clarinets, that resulted in the darkest sounding orchestral instruments.
