Download file to see previous pages The work by Michela Wrong basically deals with the origin, growth, and collapse of Mobutu regime. Still, the work cannot be considered as a biography because the author provides ample importance to aggressive journalism and exposes the secrets. Besides, the author unveils the dictator’s alliance with western nations, and atrocities faced by the common people in general. From a different angle of view, the author acts the role of a journalist who is assigned to report the problems faced by the people under a despotic ruler. Michela Wrong states that, “The rebels had started legal proceedings well before reaching Kinshasa, firing off requests for the president’s assets to be frozen in a dozen European and African countries while still on the move” (14). In short, the author portrays how a former journalist is transformed into an omnipotent dictator.
The main characters in the work include: the author and Mobutu. To be specific, the author makes use of the main characters to allow the readers to go deeper into the internal problems of Congo. The author’s role in Congo as a media correspondent is helpful to realize that how despotism destroys the internal security of a third world nation. Besides, the author exposes the reason behind the despotic ruler’s negative attitude towards democracy. To be specific, the author portrays Mobutu as a doll in the hands of multinational corporations and Western nations interested in the natural resources of Congo. On the other side, Mobutu’s character is symbolic of totalitarianism that crushes democratic ideas. Ch. Didier Gondola states that, “Mobutu took power at a time when the rebel factions had ceased to pose a real threat to the central government” (134). From a different angle of view, Mobutu’s reign helped the nation to be away from rebellion and bloodshed after independence. But this does not prove that despotism is beyond the scope of democracy.
