The focus of this paper will be on the article “YOUR TRASH IS SOMEONE’S TREASURE - The Politics of Value at a Michigan Landfill”. The ideas on the other two readings will later be incorporated to the concept of Joshua Reno’s work.
The author, Joshua Reno, uses the relationship between people and the used up materials in the form of scavenging to convey the idea. While it is a common notion that scavenging is done merely out of necessity, there are actually a number of reasons why people tend to scavenge. The approach was structured in a way that the reasons for scavenging were specified and one by one incorporated the concept of material culture in each reason (Knappett 2005: 1).
While it is true that scavenging is done by other people to survive, others actually think of it as a possibility. These people are usually the ones near landfills who see the physical qualities of things and its potential without monetary motivation. As illustrated in Four Corners landfill, some of its workers who salvage rubbish actually have a middle-class status in life (Reno 2009: 32). They see the potential of rubbish regaining its original state or turning it into a material capable of performing a new different function. They identify the value of these materials through its physical qualities and its meaning. This process is termed as individuation (Reno 2009: 34). The material’s meaning came from its past status that gives a clue of what it could possibly become and its physical qualities give confirmation on this possibility. As DeSilvey (2006: 334) puts it, “an act of ‘synchronic handiwork’ takes up the raw material and works it into missive that speaks both to that past and to the lived present”. It presents the first interaction between people and materials ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Although Blanchard and Spencer have used the phrase “One Minute”, it does not mean that managers should make and implement decisions quickly without consulting other important parties who will be affected by these changes. Looking intently at the ideas of this book, there is a need for managers to involve the employees in quick decision making for example by assessing current behavior, determining good behavior and comparing with their current behavior. ...Week 4 Response Papers Response to post Businessmen men agree with Carroll’s (1999) ment because they are highly aware of the negative impacts that their activities pose on the environment and which are not covered by their profit-and-loss statements. A realisation of this responsibility has led a wide adoption of the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and virtually all organisations currently produce annual CSR reports. This is also reflected on their environmental cautious products and production processes. However, the concept has used as a way of attaining a competitive advantage in a society that is becoming...

...MATERIAL WORLDS (Culture and Ethnography) of the Mortensen Week 2 Readings Submitted: Introduction There are many ways by which human societies invest material things with concepts and ideas to them. This process can be termed as culture-making activities by which materiality is concerned with how objects made by Man become a reflection of himself in many instances. It produced what are called as artifacts, material objects endowed with form and function. Objects are made for a particular purpose and for certain ends to endow these objects with characteristics of being that serve a particular need and thereby reflects the maker himself in them. In this sense ethnographers study the objects found within a certain culture to divine... unique...

This particular revolution was a big paradigm shift in the real sense of the word, since it brought about the demise of feudalism as a source of wealth (for those belonging to the aristocracy or the landed class) and caused the emergence of a new group of wealthy people, the entrepreneurs and the capitalists who...
