Most affected by starvation are children and women especially mothers. Undernourished or even the malnourished children end up experiencing stunted growth and mental underdevelopment. The issue of hunger affects not only the undernourished persons but it becomes an economic burden in the countries affected and the entire world. The main variety of food chiefly produced in the world is corn, which has several impacts on the health of people as well as on the environment.
Though the world population is growing quite rapidly, the issue of hunger cannot be attributed to insufficient food production but there are a number of causes of hunger. One of the factors is economic crisis that greatly affect the poor such that they cannot afford to purchase food. The developed countries greedily control the food market by destroying the surplus food to ensure that the market prises remain elevated. This results in the developing poverty stricken countries spending most of their money in purchasing the expensive food products.
Corn production has been going on for over the last 10,000 years with vast advancement not only on the cultivation technologies but also in the number of varieties. The entire world has become almost entirely dependent with corn irrespective of the health concerns of corn consumption that have been raised by scientist. It is ironic that human beings are continuously inventing new corn products irrespective of several negative impacts on the health of people and its negative effects on the environment. Most people literally feed on corn or corn products for most or even for their entire life particularly in United States (Biello Web; Pollan 5-10).
