In theme of the paper is to determine what are the important aspects of balloon framing method and platform framing method, what are the differences and similarities between the Balloon Framing methods and the Platform Framing methods and what are the advantages and disadvantages of both the framing techniques.
Balloon framing method of wood construction in which the most dominant feature is the long vertical ‘studs’ that remain uninterrupted from base to the top. The massive utilization of this technique was seen in the nineteenth century. The word balloon in the balloon framing is used to depict that the lightness of the frame that could crash in breeze. The other aspect of the Balloon Framing methods is the utilization of ‘let-in’ bracing to make the structure strong enough to hold heavy winds. However, floor and wall sheathing also provides strength to the structure. The other essential components of the structure like the collar tie, lookout rafters, rafters, fascia, studs, sill and masonry foundation is essentially the same as in the other techniques (Kibbel III, np).
The major aspect of the platform framing is that the wall frame is no continuous from sill to the top. It may be distributed floor wise or section wise. The floor itself works as the platform and all the frame work is done after the platform is constructed. The floor walls frame is constructed after the platform. For the construction of second story, the platform for the second floor is first constructed and then the walls of the second flood are raised. It can be said that the platform construction is a stick by stick construction. The other components are placed are required by the building such as rafters, header joints, floor joints, etc remain the same as in the balloon faming method.
