Generally, there seems to be a lot of disparity between sports events and political issues. The two seem to belong to entirely different worlds, with the sports being representative of the entertainment world while politics being a fundamental trait of the political world. Apparently, there appears no link between them. The very seemingly lack of connection between the entertainment world and the political world lays the basis for the concept that sports events and political issues are entirely separate things and have no connection with one another. However, the fact cannot be denied that sports have a huge national significance. This is why most countries do not allow commencement of a sports event until the national anthem has been sung. “Yani Tseng defeated Maria Hjorth in a four-hole, sudden death playoff to win the McDonalds LPGA Championship. The victory was significant not only for Tseng, but also her home country of Taiwan as it was the first time a Taiwanese golfer had won an LPGA major” (McGowin, 2009). The political significance of sports is why Olympics is often arranged to celebrate the world peace (Shaikin, 1988).
Organization of the local sports events forms part of the strategic planning of the politicians. Politicians know the importance of sports. They are aware of the power of sports to enclose people in their homes all switching to just one channel, which is the channel of sports. There occurs a significant decline in the volume of traffic on the roads when there is a cricket match between two countries that are rivals both in sports and otherwise.
