e - Learning has had a huge impact in the education field and the hype is still relatively quite high and on the rising. As defined by Faith Popcorn, "Cocooning is the need to protect oneself from the harsh, unpredictable realities of the outside world" (Popcorn, 2010). With the growing pollution and the growing desire of people to stay back at home is increasing the popularity of the online learning and education. Although people do prefer going to universities for further studies, there has been an increase in the online education.
There is a higher need by people to move into online education. There has been an increase in the global market for e – learning, and the markets have grown as much as 27% annually (McGee, 2004). This is clear from the graph below.
It has also been noted that there has been a higher demand for just in time learning. There is better use of technology for the classes and these includes videos, audio content, and even discussion boards and also live chat among the members. With the constantly increasing technology there is also a clear image that the online education will also increase (Herts, 2005). There are a number of different modes of imparting education through online learning and all of these are completely dependent on technology.
There are a number of different universities that have been able to successfully complete the online courses, for instance, some have been able to achieve a 65% as graduates through the online courses (Bishop, 2005). The secret behind ensuring that the completion rates are high is the use of smaller classes with high amounts of interaction among the students which thereby increases the chances of more graduates.
