In the search for answers for diseases and conditions that are devastating people who would otherwise be thriving and active members of society, the research that is being done on stem cells is invaluable and must continue unhampered by laws based on unfounded suppositions.
Robert Pederson, a top embryo scientist whose work had created innovations in discovery concerning embryonic research, left the University of California in order to take a position at the University of Cambridge in England as a result of a lack of support and funding for his research. Federal restrictions instituted under George W. Bush restrained the ability of scientists to further research on stem cells from embryonic resources. The isolation of these cells was found independently in November of 1998 both from research teams at John Hopkins University and from the University of Wisconsin. This discovery allowed for the advancement in knowledge in
how a single cell could divide and create separate organs and tissue during fetal development (Paarlberg 45). However, due to a lack of basic understanding in the reproductive value of embryos, restrictions were placed on the research under the guise of the debate of the sanctity of life.
The information that seems to be overlooked is that the embryos that are used in stem cell research were never going to be transferred into the womb (Magnus 35). Furthermore, throughout a woman’s lifetime there may be dozens of fertilized eggs that never implant and are naturally sloughed away. This means that embryos are not more than organic matter that is used or not used at the whim of nature. Fertilized embryos from a lab are much the same. They are disposed of if not implanted. Therefore, research using these disposed of cells can create valuable tools for cures of diseases like Parkinson’s, for regeneration of nerve and tissue, and for the development of powerful cancer fighting treatments.

The present article highlights the potential of stem cells in repairing the body tissues and emergence of stem cells as a novel therapeutic measure. Stem cells are the cells with immense potential to generate and develop into diverse cell types required for the research studies or for organogenesis.
The pluripotent stem cells also referred as embryonic cells have the ability to differentiate into every cell of the body while the multipotent (adult) stem cells can only differentiate into multiple cells but not all cell lineages in the body. Research on stem cells spans a broad range of scientific and medical fields.
There are three main types of stem cells: embryonic, adult and induced pluripotent stem cells; of which, embryonic stem cells are found in early embryos and can have the potential of developing into any cell in the body. Adult stems are found in populations around the body after birth such as in the bone marrow and can develop into a limited range of cells, while induced pluripotent stem cells are grown in the laboratory and can be modified to be more specialized.
It is interesting to note that both adults and embryos have stem cells. However, the research of adult stem cells is not what has caused so much furor in the academic and socio-religious circles. The controversy is regarding embryonic stem cells and the research thereon.
Currently, no research on human embryos can be supported with federal funds because of the controversial origins of these cells (Gerald D. Fischbach, 2004). The root of the argument lies around embryonic stem cells, which enable research that may support the development of medical treatments, but requires the destruction of an embryo to derive.
Though bioethical views are important in influencing global opinions, the moral arguments disapproving the legalization and funding of scientific research are unsubstantiated and deceiving. After the isolation of embryonic stem cell in 1998, stem cell research scientists presumed they had found a solution to several underlying medical problems.
Science and technology has developed so much that in the recent years scientists hope to use these cells to develop new tissues, treatments and potentially even organs for transplanting into a patient. First and foremost argument made by the scientific community is that human stem cell research is said to promise new life changing treatments and possible cures for many devastating diseases and injuries, such as Parkinson's disease, diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, burns and spinal cord injuries (Young 2-16).
