Download file to see previous pages... The research indicated more women shoppers leave carts where they were than male shoppers. The women answered that someone will pick them up and return them. A purpose of this study is to know the reasons for not returning the carts. My method was a direct interview with the shoppers by positioning myself at the parking lot and observed them after they had finished putting their purchased items into their cars. The conclusions I arrived at pointed to a lot of valid reasons why people left the carts and not put them back into the stalls.
People sometimes inexplicably leave grocery carts anywhere after they had used them. For supermarket owners, it has become a problem as in some areas up to 800 to 1,000 carts are left annually by users so far away from the supermarket premises. In fact, many of these users pushed their grocery carts all the way back to their residence and then just leave them there, either in unused open public property or even on someones private property. The users of carts do not seem to care and their attitude is as if the grocery carts belonged to them.
The carts are abandoned almost anywhere after being pushed home, on the sidewalks, at bus stops and outside apartment buildings. The carts are as often just left at the parking lot by the users after they had transferred their groceries to the car trunk. In fact, the problem of runaway grocery carts has approached near epidemic proportions, with some cities passing laws and ordinances making grocery cart removal from the premises of a supermarket that owned them a misdemeanour. Carts are quite expensive at approximately $250 per piece.
