When I graduated from high school, I decided to try. I took a job in a local supermarket and developed a savings plan to fund my higher education. In the meantime, I took up Business English. When I saved enough money I started my Diploma in Mass Communications. Tuition fees were very expensive and at times I had to seek financial help from my parents. They helped me as best they could, but we are a modest family and they didnt have much to give. Mostly, I had to rely on myself to pay off my fees. After completing my diploma I was very determined to study abroad. I knew how expensive it is to live abroad. For instance, the cost of one semester for an international student is more than what I earned in 8 months at the supermarket. Therefore, it took me 5 years to enough money to survive abroad. Two years ago, I finally arrived in Australia. Stepping onto the land and then beginning classes was thus far the high point of my life. I got a job to support my living expenses. Nearly all of the money that I saved from back home went to the first year and a half of my studies. I never was able to leave my country during my childhood so all the experience I had with foreign cultures and ideas was through television. I believe this is what led me to study abroad and pursue my Bachelor’s in Communication. I could combine my unique multicultural perspective as an Asian student studying in Australia and help people see the world in new ways. I could show them that in the end we aren’t all so different, so it’s important to care about everyone. I would be like the journalists I saw on TV, flying to disparaged parts of the world, interviewing people – that’s how I would make a difference.
