It is mentioned in the text that the management’s role is to create a supportive and problem solving work environment which facilitates and not controls the prevailing value. Same is the role of management in Joe’s company that Joe is expecting to be. Another assumption is that the rewards should encourage the worker to deliver high personal performance. Same is the case with Joe; he wants rewards such as higher compensation and finance to pursue his degree in architecture. He will be motivated by higher compensation and will deliver higher personal performance as he used to do earlier.
Joe was never given a feedback on his good performance and dedication, although, he performed well earlier. Individuals deserve honest feedback on their work performance from the management time to time. Joe was not treated fairly although he worked with dedication and performed the best he could, but still he was not treated as the other architects with degrees were treated.
The management did not focus on setting goals for the individuals in Joe’s case; this distorts the performance expectation for the management and the individuals as well. In the four-factor model, the first link is between the motivation and performance. That is if the employee is motivated, then he will deliver the performance expected. There was no agreement on the acceptance of performance expectations in Joe’s case. No goals were established for Joe, which made him think that his input is not required and he is just a lowly draftsman. The behavior similar to that of Joe like daydreaming and not working deliberately can be eliminated by the use of rewards. The rewards are not distributed equitably in Joe’s company as the architects who have a degree are paid more and Joe is the lowest paid person in the firm.
