The first assumption that employees have high motivation was clearly manifested by Joe. In fact, he was not only performing at high levels, he also made suggestions and even volunteered for special projects. At the beginning, Joe’s motivation pushed him to become a high performer in the firm. Unfortunately when it came to the factor “outcome”, failure resulted. The manifestation of this was that Joe’s ideas were not appreciated by co-workers as manifested by his heated arguments with architects. The second assumption falls in here and explains the cause of Joe’s misery: the management lacked facilitation of Joe’s work. In fact, the management may have not even clearly oriented Joe about the expectations from his job. It was a case of a “sink or swim” for Joe when he came in the firm. Later on, the case also stated Joe’s complaints about lack of respect for his opinions which he attributes to his educational attainment. However, a more insidious form of resentment is clearly stated when Joe remarked that “my wife has to get a job…and I’m the lowest-paid person in this firm.” This shows that management was not able to give Joe an objective feedback of his performance. He got subjective feedback from co-workers instead. Although Joe could have been self-governing, the management did not clearly identify his tasks as well as parameters. Lastly, it seems that Joe did not get verbal appreciation when he was a high-performer. Again, the management forgot its task of integrating performance and satisfaction. At this point, Joe has already become bitter and takes issues on a personal level thus resulting to the fourth factor which is satisfaction. Joe has entered a state of dissatisfaction which needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
