Q What is the tone of this essay? Explain. The tone of the essay is informal, sarcastic, and deceptively casual. While the dwells on the serious issue of racial discrimination in America, she uses a light and humorous tone to convey the message. The target audience could be the average light complexioned American on the street, in the bus, just anywhere. It is a passionate appeal to the audience to treat Americans of African origin as equals, and not as any fancy people from another world or another planet. The identity of a person is not decided by the color of the skin or the texture of the hair, but by the thoughts of the person, by the competencies of the person. She appears to be irritated by the way some ignorant people try to trace her roots, not to the country or culture, but to the person in the family who was originally fair complexioned.
The use of contractions like I’ll, I’m, don’t, isn’t and it’s give the essay an informal tone and make it interesting to the audience.
Q Whats stylistic devices have been used in this essay?
The stylistic devices used in the essay are irony and conflict to deepen the meaning. “We mixed-raced people know what you really mean. You dont want to know where we were born or where we grew up. You dont want to know what kinds of regimes we lived under or what languages we speak. You want to know who in our family isnt white.”What might have been an inquisitive person’s innocuous question aimed at knowing the person better is taken as an offense by the author. “Yet because my skin isnt white, some people think its entirely acceptable to hound me about my so-called identity. People who dont know me, dont want to know me, who will never see me again. People who just need to know so that they know. And if youre one of these people, Ill tell you that Im from Vanya.” This sentence clearly reflects the conflict in the mind of the author. The author should have the necessary confidence to brush these remarks casually and go on with life, rather than allowing such remarks or incidents to hurt her.
