Very often in the novel, Bucknow seems to be the calming effect at the centre of the craziness around her. She quietly observes and comments on everything that happens but she rarely gets drawn into the everyday dramas. Bucknow is stuck in the middle of Kansas amidst her mother’s and friends love for her. Bucknow has to learn how to confront the world around her that is full of baffling contradictions (Curry, Ramm & Rich, 2007). She faces competing for claims for her affection and allegiance from which she has to learn how to create a moral code. Her own mother preaches to her about responsibility but she gets pregnant again without any signs of getting a job or husband. Lucknow's boyfriend leaves her for her more physically attractive friend. Her good friends only fancy sex, shoplifting, and getting high, which Bucknow knows is wrong but she must never say so. She has to decide her own theological orientation from what hovers around her and what she observes in the world. It is such occurrences that the reader develops a claustrophobic feel for the narrator in the novel. She has to overcome one adversity or challenge for her to make it out of this seemingly unending spiral in her centre. It is vital to note the mental strength shown by young Bucknow in escaping her centre of everything. She knows that she would not picket a science class or mock one’s religious backgrounds, she does not want to become a teenage mother or spit on one, she knows to never look down on poor women or exchange arms for hostages. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
