Download file to see previous pages Even though Shakespeare could not have been the first person to use mental concept, he may be the first person to utilize various forms of it in the play for the audience to see. Psychology is defined as the discipline associated with mental processes and behavior and how they are affected by the organism’s mental, external and physical states. Identifying this psychological behavior is what is to as psychological diagnosis. After reading the play, I have encountered several characters having psychological disorders such as split- personality disorder, schizophrenia, delusions, and senility. Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder where an individual present with hallucinations, delusions, loss of motivation and incoherent speech. Such people may have imaginary events and people in their lives. Split personality disorder on the hand is as a disease identified by appearance within the person of more personality each with its trait and name. Senility is often associated with characteristics of old age while the delusion refers to a false belief that is firmly held by the character (Shakespeare, 3)
The main characters presented in the play are King Hamlet, Queen Gertrude, Hamlet, Claudius, Laertes, Polonius, Ophelia, and Horatio, who is Hamlet college friend and Polonius, Ophelia’s father. Other characters in the play are Guildenstern and Rosencrantz. Prince Hamlet shows signs of different psychological disorders. One of the mental disorders revealed is Schizophrenia that is by hallucinations, delusions, and loss of motivation. He sees a hallucination of his ghost father who died sometimes back. The ghost is, however, a figment of Hamlet’s illusion and imagination. He says that he has developed his theory after Horatio observed the king’s spirit. Marcellus and Barnardo too are schizophrenic.
