Download file to see previous pages In “I stand here ironing” by Tillie Olsen, the author presents a mother now has a negative influence on her daughters. The mother had five children but only talks about two of her children. She mistreats one of them and also disregards the other. She speaks of Susan and compares her with Emily whom she seems to have ignored. The mother did not comfort Emily when she had a nightmare rather she talked to her using harsh words. Even though poverty and a great depression are responsible for the way they live, Emily was neglected and left without any maternal love (Olsen 184). This has made her a sad daughter with low esteem as well as the destruction of physical appearance as a result of the attitude shown to her by her mother. Even though she was too stressed up, the mother’s behavior and attitudes prove of her incapability of being a good mother.
In “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, the author presents a mother takes good care of her daughter. Despite the fact that she lost everything that she had in life, she still had a positive outlook about things being good for her daughter. She tries as much as possible to establish every part of her daughters dream to come into reality. For example, she tells her daughter that “You can be anything you want to be in America” which made the daughter excited as her mother was able to picture her prodigy. Her mother keeps pushing her into the discovery of her hidden talents and becomes someone that she (her mother) is not. As an immigrant, the mother wanted to live her American dream through her daughter and even pushed her to do things that she did not desire. ...Download file to see next pagesRead more

I stand here ironing

...I STAND HERE IRONING "I stand here ironing" is Tillie Olsen's masterpiece on strained mother-daughter relationship that was the result of a mother's inability to provide her daughter with enough love and tender care. The mother in this case wanted the best for her child and this is important in the story. She was not the kind of person who would abandon her child but circumstances were such that she couldn't offer her daughter the generous love she wanted and deserved. Through her reminiscing about the past with small intrusions from the present, the mother reconstructs her daughter's...

Tillie Olsen's I stand here Ironing By susan Cahill's

...Model Paper 273863 I found Tillie Olsen's short story, "I Stand Here Ironing," to be a very honest and sad tale of a mother that is too stressed outto focus on what actually matters in her life. The joy of life is eked out by the concerns of children, no husband, no secure job, no real source of income, the stress of poverty, babies, bills, and life. At the end of the story, I was motivated to rethink what matters in my life and focus on those people and things rather than allow myself to become wrapped up in small issues that do not matter. One of the reasons this is a sad commentary on life is the mother's...

The physical action of the iron as it goes back and forth is juxtaposed with the mental process of reflection on the past and the present. "I stand here ironing, and what you asked me moves tormented back and forth 1 with the...

Literature - I stand here ironing & Teenage Wasteland

.... For that reason, the real focus of the vehemence in the poem must certainly be her husband, who acts as a substitute for the father she never knew. The first half of the poem sets the stage for her look back toward a literal representation of her father that will shortly transform into the symbolic representation of Ted Hughes. Plath announces that she has been trying to deal with her father’s real—and completely unavoidable—abandonment for thirty years by comparing it to a shoe she has been wearing since a child: “You do not do, you not do/ any more, black shoe” (LL, 1-2). The second stanza starts with two lines that are both shocking and yet ironic, as Plath states “Daddy, I have...
