This essay demonstrates that the four families consisting of four mothers and four daughters shift in the tragic sands of time where they experience bitterness and unspeakable loss. Instead of despairing and brooding over their losses, these brave women bond together in ‘The Joy Luck Club” to cheer each other on, raise spirits and also some money. They despair at the attitude exhibited by their daughters who have long past crossed this divide and have learned to accept themselves as they are, i.e. ‘American’. The process of transformation and assimilation spans over a period of sixty to eighty years and finally culminates in 1980 when the book got published. The lives of the younger generation of Chinese immigrants are largely revolutionized as they have accepted and adopted the American lifestyle completely. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
