Suppose an airline had over 6000 missing pieces of luggage last year, and this number represents 0.2% of the total pieces of luggage handled. What types of data would you request from the airline to help you understand the nature of the problem and how to solve it?
The airline will need objective data to help understand the nature of the problem. First, I will need attribute data to classify the number of occurrences such as whether or not the luggage that were missing were stolen or misplaced and mishandled. The airline will, therefore, be asked to produce data any information about whether or not they suspect the luggage to have been stolen or mishandled and misplaced. I will also need to be provided with variable data in the form of how many airline attendants on duty each day, how many luggage are reported to be missing on a daily basis and the time it takes for the attendant to realize the luggage is missing. Subjective data may also be required to make decisions such as what were the possible causes of the disappearance of this luggage. Similarly, the airline would require t know who were the aircraft attendant on duty on the particular days when the luggage went missing.
