The presenter is sector organizer of SIPTU manufacturing division. Therefore, he understands operation mechanisms for SIPTU Ireland’s pharmaceutical sector in terms of collective bargaining. It is evident from the presentation that SIPTU is widening its operations not only in the world, but also in the EU. The union is working with major MNCs in Ireland to ensure that employees have good working conditions. Alan further highlights that SIPTU is working with the Pharmaceutical Chemical and Medical Devices Sector (PCMD) to ensure it regulates and provides good working conditions for employees in the sector.
The presentation answered the most important question in people’s minds, “why is SIPTU so much concerned with PCMD?” According to Alan O’Leary, the PCMD sector is a crucial employer in Ireland contributing to about 50% of Irish exports and providing about 50000 total employments in Ireland. He also explained that PCMD is the largest exporter of pharmaceutical medicine in Ireland and was second in European trade in pharmaceutical in 2009. It is clear Alan’s presentation that PCMD is a large global corporation. The speaker further explained the need for workers in the PCMD sector to have good working conditions, better wage scales among other benefits. The presentation makes people understand the role of SIPTU for instance the fact that it offers an important arena for employees in the pharmaceutical sector to present their issues regarding good working conditions.
