English is a beautiful spoken tongue; however, an international student must have a pocket dictionary ready during the lectures for difficult vocabularies. There were words that are not spoken every day. The objective was clearly laid out, but it is not just about it. The objective should be clearly presented like a no brainer. You know what I mean. The presentation of the objectives is a very crucial part of the discussion. The comprehension starts there. I preferred a spoon speed discussion at the very beginning. Jumping into the topic will caused my brain to say “Hey, what’s happening on here?” I am honest. I wrote this without sugar coat. Let’s move on.
Did the speaker know what he really was talking about? Being an alien of the topic he covered which is Chinese Cultures, Sean Cassidy was well prepared during the lectures. I can sense it on his figure. There’s no question that he had rehearsed himself to present the discussion with awe. In fact, he presented each data, fact, and the like with humor. He had a good sense of humor. But we have to remember each time, during an event like this, that we have a different level of understanding. Each student has different level of understanding. Student A can grasp an idea without further elaboration. Student B can comprehend the subject with few hints and clues. But there is student C who has difficulty in understanding quick details. So, what is the responsibility of the speaker aside from understanding the topic he is covering about? He has to understand the audiences. I used the plural term of the word audience because I want to emphasize that there are different levels of students’ comprehension as I’ve earlier stated. What makes an effective speaker?
