Download file to see previous pages She was saddened by the fact that many who researched into this matter before her only focused on the men because they were used to provide labor because of their muscular bodies. To her this was chauvinistic as women’s trials and tribulations were left untouched and unheard of. In America is being a woman in the olden days only meant that you are inferior beings and their voices were not meant to be heard. This simply meant that a woman’s role is to cook, clean, give birth and take care of the kids. White wondered whether this was also the fate of black women in the times of slavery.
White was inspired by an author book by an 1851 speech by Ms. Sojourner Truth who narrated how she gave birth to thirteen children and to her pain saw twelve of the sold into slavery (17) She goes ahead to say that she had no one to turn to, no one to offer a shoulder to lean on or someone to wipe her tears but Christ alone (14). She utters the words, “I could work as much and eat as much as a man (when I could get it) and bear de lash as well—and ar’n’t I a woman?” These statements seemed to have placed a great burden on White to an extent that she could be quite no more. White took it upon herself to research into the lives of the slaves of the female gender and represents them through her book. This research and analysis she did through stories of slaves, and also through interaction with descendants whose ancestry can be linked back to slavery.
There were stories about a slave woman called Jezebel, who is said to have had unquenchable sexual urges. She is said to have lain with a huge number of men white ones included. She had to refute this myth and do her own analysis as you cannot use the character of a single individual; if that myth was true, to generalize the characters of many. Even if the myth was true, White defends the lady. She suggests that her actions may have been a fruit of bad circumstances.
